As Metro Atlanta prepares to welcome 2.5 million new residents by 2040 and global events like the FIFA World Cup and Super Bowl, the need for coordinated infrastructure planning has never been more urgent.

To address this, the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) hosted a “Utility Day” on April 29, bringing together representatives from Transportation, Watershed Management, Public Works, City Planning, and private utility vendors. The goal was to strengthen collaboration on permitting, inspections, and project coordination as construction activity ramps up across the city.

During the meeting, Mayor Andre Dickens urged all partners to embrace a unified approach to project delivery.

“It’s got to be Signed, Sealed AND Delivered before you can say it’s complete,” Dickens said, referencing Stevie Wonder’s classic hit to emphasize full-cycle accountability and communication.

The stakes are high. With $145 billion in infrastructure investments approved by voters and the City through programs like Renew Atlanta and Moving Atlanta Forward, coordination is essential to ensuring efficient, timely delivery.

Commissioner Solomon Caviness and the ATLDOT team shared a roadmap of projects planned over the next 18 months and outlined updates to the City’s permitting process designed to streamline timelines and reduce disruptions.
